Where the calories actually are
A matcha latte has three ingredients and one of them is nearly free.
| Component | Typical amount | Approx. calories |
|---|---|---|
| Ceremonial matcha powder | 2 g (1 tsp) | 5–10 |
| Whole milk | 250 ml | 150–160 |
| Sweetener / syrup | 2 pumps | 40–80 |
| Standard café latte | 16 oz | 200–320 |
Green tea leaves are almost entirely non-caloric. Because matcha is the whole leaf ground up, you do get a little more than from steeped tea — along with the fibre, catechins and L-theanine that make matcha interesting in the first place — but it is still a rounding error next to the milk.
Milk choice, compared
| Milk (250 ml) | Approx. calories | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Whole dairy | 150–160 | Richest texture, best foam |
| Semi-skimmed | 120–130 | Common café default |
| Skimmed | 85–90 | Thinner, less foam |
| Oat milk | 120–170 | Often higher than dairy — barista blends are sweetened |
| Soy milk | 100–130 | Most protein of the plant options |
| Almond milk (unsweetened) | 30–45 | The lightest common choice |
| Coconut milk drink | 50–90 | Varies enormously by brand |
Oat milk is the one that surprises people. Barista-edition oat milk is formulated to foam and often contains added oils and sugars, which regularly puts it above whole dairy milk. If you switched to oat for calorie reasons, it may not have done what you intended.
The pre-sweetened powder trap
Many café matcha blends and most supermarket “matcha latte mix” tins are pre-sweetened — sugar is frequently the first ingredient. That means asking for “no syrup” may change nothing at all, because the sweetness is already in the powder.
Ceremonial or culinary grade pure matcha is just ground tea leaf, nothing else. If you are making it at home, that distinction is worth more than any milk swap: it moves a drink from roughly 250 calories to roughly 100 while you still control the sweetness yourself.
This is the same pattern as boba tea, where the tea is incidental and the sugar and toppings carry the entire total.
Café versions and sizes
| Version | Size | Approx. calories |
|---|---|---|
| Hot matcha latte, dairy, sweetened | 12 oz | 160–220 |
| Hot matcha latte, dairy, sweetened | 16 oz | 200–320 |
| Iced matcha latte, dairy, sweetened | 16 oz | 180–280 |
| Matcha latte, almond milk, unsweetened | 16 oz | 60–110 |
| Matcha frappé / blended | 16 oz | 350–500 |
Iced versions often come in slightly lower than hot ones of the same nominal size, simply because ice occupies volume that would otherwise be milk. Blended and frappé versions are a different drink entirely — those belong in the dessert column.
Making a lighter one
- Check the powder first. Pure matcha versus a pre-sweetened mix is the biggest single difference available.
- Ask for one pump instead of the default. Usually two or three; one is generally enough alongside milk.
- Unsweetened almond milk if you want the lightest cup — roughly 100 calories saved against whole dairy.
- Do not assume oat is lighter. It frequently is not.
- Order the smaller size. Dull advice, reliably effective: a 12 oz is around a third less than a 16 oz.
A drink is one of the easiest things to miscount because it does not feel like eating, and 300 calories in a cup is the same 300 calories as anywhere else — the point our guide to why calorie trackers fail keeps returning to.
Frequently asked questions
How many calories are in a matcha latte?
A standard 16 oz café matcha latte made with dairy milk and syrup contains roughly 200 to 320 calories. Made with unsweetened almond milk and no added sweetener, the same drink is closer to 60 to 110 calories.
How many calories are in matcha powder itself?
A typical 2 gram serving of pure matcha powder contains only about 5 to 10 calories. Almost all the calories in a matcha latte come from the milk and any added sweetener rather than the tea.
Is oat milk lower in calories than dairy in a matcha latte?
Usually not. Barista-style oat milk is formulated to foam and often contains added oils and sugars, which commonly puts it at or above whole dairy milk. Unsweetened almond milk is the lightest widely available option.
Why is my matcha latte sweet if I did not add syrup?
Many café blends and most supermarket matcha latte mixes are pre-sweetened, often with sugar as the first ingredient. Asking for no syrup will not change those, so check whether the powder is pure matcha or a sweetened mix.
